    The Federal Republic of Germany is in Europe. East and West Germany united in 1990.

    Unity Day, October 3.
    "Tag der Einheit". A day observed with prayer for national unity. Prior to reunification this day was observed on June 17, the anniversary of the day in 1953 when a riot erupted in the Russian section of Berlin and spread throughout Germany. A treaty signed between the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) indicated that lands of the GDR would accede to the FRG on October 3, 1990. This has become the new date to celebrate Unity Day.

    The German name is "Buss und Bettag".

    Day of the Workers, May 1.
    "Tag der Arbeiter". Labor Day.

    Christmas, December 25.
    Germans call it Weihnact, meaning "holy night". The German name for Santa Claus is Kris Kringle, derived from Krist Kindli, which means "Christ Child". Like Scandinavia, the presents are hidden.

    Relations with the United States were strained when Maurice Bishop took power in a bloodless coup and suspended the 1974 Constitution. Following another coup in which Bishop among others were executed, the United States invaded Grenada on October 25, 1983. They were accompanied by troups from Jamaica, Barbados, and other countries. The Constitution was reinstated, and elections were held the following year.
