    British Cameroons had been associated with its neighbor Nigeria, which became independent in 1960. Following this, the northern region voted to merge with Nigeria as the province of Sardauna, and the southern region voted to be unified with the
    Republic of Cameroon on October 1, 1961.

    Army Day or National Liberation Army Festival, August 1, 1927.
    Anniversary of the first uprising by a communist-led army against the Nationalists. This was the beginnings of the Red Army, which later became the People's Liberation Army. This day is now an occasion to improve the relationship between the army and civilians.

    For the founding of the Chinese Communist Party in Shanghai in 1921.

    Youth Day, May 4.
    A day in memory of the first mass student movement in 1919 touched off by the existing Chinese government that gave in to the Japanese attempts to colonize Shandong Province. It is also an anti-Confucius movement as well as one that promoted the western scientific and democratic ideas.

    Teacher's Day, September 1.
    It was begun in the 1980's in order to reverse the anti-intellectual sentiment created during the Cultural Revolution, and has not yet become an established holiday.

    Commorates the revolution of 1959 led by Fidel Castro which ousted dictator Fulgencio Batista.
